Reading

It has been successfully shown that children that read regularly excel better in all areas of life.  Therefore, in Key Stage 2 we encourage our children to read as much as possible. We encourage the reading of both fiction and non-fiction books.  Your child will always have a reading book in their bag along with their reading record.  They can change their books when they are ready.   We encorage parents to listen/supervise their child reading at least 5 times a week and enjoy books together frequently.  This may seem a high expectation, but as reading is the essential ingredient to good progress, I think you would agree it is an expectation worth meeting.

PE

Please ensure your child has the correct named PE kit and it is kept in school at all times.  Please remember to name bags and all items of clothing.

PE is currently on a Monday and Thursday.

Homework

Homework will be sent home on a regular basis, normally a Friday and due in on Wednesday.  There will also be big projects from time to time that children will have longer to complete.  Times Table sheets will be sent home every week night to complete overnight and return the next day.  With the introduction of the year 4 multiplication test it is ever more essential that children are able to recall their tables and completing their Times Table sheets are essential to support this.

Snack & Drinks

As a healthy eating school, we encourage children to drink throughout the day.  Water is the best drink for children to have as it is the healthiest and if spilt does not attract ants!  They can also bring in a piece of fruit to eat at breaktime.

Science

In Science, we learn about the following topics:  digestion and teeth, electricity, animals and their habitats, states of matter and sound.  Last year we had a visit from the Explorer Dome and we took part in our annual pet show where we had a sheep, pig, dogs, cats, rabbits, lizards, snails and more.

We also discovered more about animals living in the rainforest with our trip to 'The Living Rainforest'.

Topic

In Key Stage 2 we intend to have lots of fun-filled topic days where parents will be invited to discover what we have learnt at the end of the year. This is an opportunity for children to share what they do at school and a great way to show an interest in your child's learning.

We ensure our topics are based around the children's interests and one linked to the whole community where possible.

For instance last year the children visited Worlebury Hillfort where they learnt about their local prehistory.

And during our WW2 topic, we had visits from local people to share their war memories, a school from Bristol who were evacuated and even carrier pigeons.
